Flow Cytometry Unit

Welcome to our Flow Cytometry Lab where cutting-edge technology empowers innovative research. The main laboratory is located at the Tygerberg Medical Campus, with a satellite facility at the Stellenbosch Campus. We offer access to five specialized flow cytometers: the Beckman Coulter DxFLEX for conventional flow cytometry; the AMNIS® ImageStreamX Mk II, which integrates flow cytometry with high-resolution imaging; the Cytek Full Spectrum Flow Cytometer for advanced multi-parameter analysis; and two high-precision cell sorters — the Beckman Coulter SRT and the BD FACSMelody™. Our facilities are equipped to support a diverse range applications, from cellular to synthetic particle analyses.

Flow Cytometry

​Flow cytometry is a powerful analytical technique used to measure and analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of cells or particles in a fluid stream. By labeling cells with fluorescent probes and passing them through a laser, flow cytometry captures data on parameters like size, granularity, and fluorescence intensity. The system quickly analyzes thousands of individual cells, providing detailed, multi-parameter data for applications such as cell sorting, phenotyping, and studying cell functions or interactions. It’s widely used in fields like immunology, oncology, and diagnostics.
