BIOGRIP SWAN Node

The BIOGRIP Soil and Water Analysis Node (SWAN) at Stellenbosch University provides advanced soil and water analysis using state-of-the-art instruments. Part of the Biogeochemistry Research Infrastructure Platform—a Department of Science and Innovation initiative—BIOGRIP advances biogeochemistry research across South Africa through a multi-institutional network with a hub at UCT and nodes at four universities. Stellenbosch University’s node, managed by the Central Analytical Facility, offers industry and research clients access to cutting-edge analytical techniques for water and soil research. The facility also trains postgraduate students in equipment operation.
OUR TECHNIQUES EXPLAINED

Ion Chromatography, O/H Stable Isotope Analysis, pH/EC analysis & TOC analyser

Ion Chromatography Separates and quantifies dissolved ions using specialized columns and conductivity detection. Analyzes major anions and cations in water samples from rainwater to seawater. O/H Stable Isotope Analysis: Measures oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios to trace water sources and hydrological processes. Determines δ18O, δ17O and δ2H signatures in liquid water and vapor samples. The Total organic carbon (TOC) analyser, a Vario TOC cube (Elementar) can be used for the quantification of various carbon species. This instrument can be used for the analysis of liquid and solid samples ranging from ultrapure water, industrial wastewater, concentrated salt solutions and/or solids. The discrete analyser (Skalar BlueVisionTM) which can be used for the quantification of chemical (Cl, SO4, PO4, NO3, NO2) and other properties (alkalinity, total hardness, colour) of aqueous samples is also available.
